City raises, part II

Well, I knew my column about how department heads in the City of Wayne shouldn’t get salary increases wouldn’t be popular.
Just my luck, the first one I ran into after it published happened to be armed.
Of course, Deputy Police Chief Tony DiGuisti didn’t reach for his taser or anything like that, but he was quick to point out a few things that I left out of my column.
Without the increases, department heads will be faced with earning less money than some of the people working under them, for one thing.
And, because the city has cut back on staff levels, department heads are doing a lot more work now then they had to even a couple of years ago. Diguisti is handling a lot of the duties that Wendy Snook once had, before she was transferred to city hall.
I’m sure that Ramzi El-Gharib is facing the same kind of thing in the building and engineering department—he’s trying to get additional staffers so the city doesn’t lose any ground on the blight fight.
Kim Alexander in the Parks and Recreation department is trying to provide the same services with less staff, too. I’m sure she had to absorb some more tasks.
I realized all that when I wrote the column, but didn’t put it in. (As it is, it’s still a little wordy for my tastes). Sadly it doesn’t change the way I feel. Show me anyone, anywhere in Michigan who isn’t doing more at work for less money or the same. It’s a sign of how things are across the state, not just in Wayne.
There are still thousands of people out there working for less than what they deserve. Hopefully everyone will eventually get what’s coming to them.
