One Little (and improbable) Victory

I couldn’t believe the results when I saw them: voters in Wayne overwhelmingly approved Proposal 1.
The 1 mill tax levy will be in place for the next 25 years, generating $20 million for road and sidewalk repair.
Our newspaper endorsed the project; as an editor I wrote about why I would vote for it and as a resident I did vote for it.
I’m still surprised it was approved, though.
Look around: the economy is in the toilet, every time Ford Motor posts its losses, rumors start up about the plants here in the city—which contribute more than half the tax base—and officials in Lansing are doing whatever they’re doing (it isn’t solving anything).
Still, the tax increase was approved in every precinct—even those where the streets aren’t in bad shape.
Now it’ll be the responsibility of the city council to ensure that us residents get the most for their money. They need to continue to keep the city budget tight, and tighten it more if possible. And it’s up to us residents to hold them to the task.
The bottom line, though, is that it might take a little from all of us, but brighter days are ahead.
