A taxing discussion

A number of state deadlines are marching toward us and there still seems to be little movement on the budget situation.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm has threatened up to $125 in per pupil cuts to school districts if a budget solution isn’t in place by June 1.
She’s also warned that she’ll have to shut down state government—which will, if nothing else, cut down on all the chatter.
They’re talking about increasing taxes on this and that, services, soda—you name it. They’re even talking about increasing our income tax.
In a way this makes sense, but only if its done right. It has to be a graduated system that impacts the rich and leaves the poor and middle class alone.
Everything else they’re talking about hits the average person in the wallet. A tax on services will be harder for the average worker to absorb. So will a tax on pop, beer and everything else.
Like most of the people in Michigan, I’m in that boat. I’m already factoring in the higher price of gas into my budget, cutting out a few trips to the stores and restaurants.
I make most of my major plans based on my tax refund and if that gets any smaller, I’m looking at a bleak year. A tax increase aimed at the lower and middle class will further weaken the economy here. Let those who can afford it pay the bill.
