Houston, we have a cool project

I’m often envious of school kids today.
It happens when I hear about some neat project they’re doing at school, show up with my camera and notebook and get down all the details. I usually walk away with a smile on my face, thinking: ‘Wow, we never did anything that cool when I was in school.’
Today I was in Northville, where portions of Amerman Elementary School were transformed into an alien planet, a mission control center and an experimentation center on Earth.
Fifth graders were taking part in a Space Simulation project that had them play the part of NASA scientists and astronauts exploring an alien world and comparing it to our own.
It’s a huge effort coordinated between teachers—Wendy LaValle and Robin Long—parents and students. I’ll have more about it in the print and online editions of The Northville Journal this week.
Pretty neat stuff, though. Creative teaching leads to creative youngsters, I always say.
