A river runs through it

Today I visited one of my favorite places in the City of Wayne.
Called Dynamite Park by some, it’s off Michigan Avenue by the Missionary Baptist Church. The park consists of a small circular drive, a wide open field and wood-chip covered trails that lead back to and along the Rouge River.
A group of workers from Ford Motor Company were there today for their annual prelude to Rouge River Day, a volunteer effort throughout Wayne County to clean up portions of the Rouge River.
Kurt Kuban, a friend and fellow Wayne resident, was there leading the effort—his shirt spattered with green debris and muck.
I’ll have a few more details about what’s going on down there in the paper on May 24, but there’s so much potential at the park and along the river in general.
There are places that you’d never think you’d find in an industrial city—where river banks form steep cliffs that tower above the meandering waterway, dens and thickets that an untold number of creatures call home.
The river needs some work, of course. Like the pathways, it needs to be cleaned up so that it can shine like the hidden jewel it is.
In many ways, it’s similar to the city, itself.
