A good 'act' to follow

It was a close vote on Tuesday night, but the Wayne theater groups maintained their tenuous connection with the Wayne Parks and Recreation Department.
It didn’t really surprise me and I think it’s a good thing, in the long run.
This is a group of talented people who—during the past few years particularly—have always stepped up to help out the city. They’ve taken over events that the city couldn’t afford to put on anymore. They filled a major whole in the Wayne Wheelfest last year when budget cuts eliminated the Sunday entertainment. They bring a lot of culture to an otherwise bread-and-butter town.
Even so, I’d have done it a little differently if I were on the council.
I’d have put a caveat in the motion that the groups should actively seek participation from Wayne residents. These are our tax dollars at work here, and six out of 50 members just doesn’t cut it, in my opinion.
For that matter, if these outsiders want to show how much the theater means to the community and how much better the community is for it, why don’t they move in?
You’re telling me that Garden City is a better place to live than Wayne? Come on….
