A well-run event

Attwood Park in Wayne was crowded with children and their families Sunday afternoon.
Some of the youngsters bolted through an inflatable obstacle course; others tried their hands (and feet) at a portable climbing wall or performed gravity-defying leaps with the help of huge bungee cords. They chased each other through Planet Playscape and, of course, played soccer.
It was the annual picnic put on by the Wayne-Westland Soccer League and it was a well-run event, indeed.
Trophies were handed out; all the participants got medals. Henry thought his was the coolest thing ever. He pronounced that it was the best day of his life and he proudly wore it for the rest of the day. He may still have it on.
Volunteers churned out enough hamburgers and hot dogs to feed everyone—no small task, there.
State Rep. Richard LeBlanc (D-Westland) showed up to congratulate the youngsters, and Westland Mayor Bill Wild donated the largest raffle prize: four tickets to an upcoming Detroit Tigers game. I don’t know who won, because I was too busy being disappointed that it wasn’t me.
Still it was a good time for all. Good job, guys.
