Marketing? Now that is a ‘twist!’

A quick trip through downtown Northville today showed me that there are, indeed, sidewalks in place for the annual sidewalk sales event.
The colored concrete—still a little drab for my tastes—is in place and the bricks installed, providing a glimpse of what the finished town square project will look like.
I saw something else, too, that took me by surprise. There were several people wearing T-shirts with the new Northville marketing logo on them.
“Timeless with a twist.”
Hmm.
Of all the slogans I’ve heard lately in the wave of municipal marketing, that’s got to be the worst.
At least Northville residents and merchants have one, though. If I want to show a little home town pride—and I do—I can wear a shirt emblazoned with a simple ‘Wayne’ logo.
Of course, in Northville, there is a proactive Downtown Development Authority (DDA) board that meets more than four times a year. They don’t have a budget anywhere near the Wayne DDA’s, but they plan, they prepare, they push for change.
They market their community to attract attention; they don’t wait for it to show up on their doorstep.
That’s something we need here, too, more than a logo.
