Friends and family of John Harvey will gather from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday to celebrate the life of the long-time Wayne resident.
Harvey, the unofficial gardener of Wayne, died last Tuesday at the age of 83, following a long illness. He would have turned 84 on Aug. 7.
“The City of Wayne has lost a hero,” said Don Hartford, former Wayne City Councilman.
The Hartfords, who now live in the south, had maintained a strong relationship with the lovable old man, who was the sort of unofficial gardener in the City of Wayne. He took on the responsibility of tending the flower gardens in Goudy Park—and more—after he retired.
He was a fairly regular speaker at city council meetings, where he displayed his wit and good cheer, even in trying circumstances.
Anyone who knew him would agree that he had a genuine, pure heart, and he’ll be missed.
The service, which family members have described as a day to share memories and retell stories, will take palce at the clubhouse at Westwick Square Apartments. The address is 4900 Heather Place, Wayne, MI 48184. It’s south of Annapolis and east of Venoy Road.
