A Constant Fight

Once again, darkness drove me inside.
I had made real progress, though — the lid to my yard waste can overflowed with a variety of tenacious weeds. My front lawn was beginning to resemble, well, a front lawn and not some overgrown lab experiment at a college of agriculture.
I turned on the sprinkler before I headed inside, hoping to revive what little grass has lived through the dry summer. One small step against blight.
I’ve been embarrassed at the state of my lawn for most of the year. Here I am, calling on people to take care of their property while the weeds in my own yard slowly advanced toward the porch.
It’s not that I’m a hypocrite or that I don’t care about how my property or street looks. I care about values.
It’s not that I’m unable to do the work, either. I actually enjoy it, sitting out front with my mp3 player blaring in my ears. I must look silly, one man against hundreds of green foes, but I get into a Zen-like trance as I wiggle each one individually from the ground.
No, my problem is that the weeds have a lot more time to grow than I have to pick them.
I’m making progress, though. It’s important to set such an example for everyone else. I figure if anyone sees me in this continually losing battle, they’ll be inspired to take one on on their own. Maybe eventually there will be fewer weed seeds blowing around and the fight will be that much easier….
