Politics before progress

Whew. The budget crisis is over.
We can all relax now and congratulate our hard-working legislature for avoiding a governmental shutdown.
I know, the government technically did shut down for about four hours after midnight on Sunday. But that doesn’t really count, does it? I mean, who could tell?
Come on. If there is anyone left in our great state that doesn’t think this whole bit of over the weekend drama was completely staged, I’d like him or her to come forward.
There was only one reason to put this off until after the 11th hour: the blame game. Republicans probably realized months ago that some kind of tax increase would be necessary, but they had to wait until the last second to avert a complete travesty and approve one. That way, when they’re trying to take back the House next year, they can tell all their voters that the Democrats forced them into that position.
The Democrats can use the reverse: a state shutdown wouldn’t have even been mentioned, had the Republicans not shown common sense early on.
It’s just another example of politics before progress. Their bickering might not get anything done, but it provides plenty of campaign fodder for the next election cycle. I can hardly wait.
