The uncommitted voter
Tomorrow is the presidential primary election in Michigan and I’m still undecided—not only in whom to vote for or against, but in whether to go out and vote at all.
That’s a strange thing for someone in my position to say, someone that is always telling people to go out and exercise their civic duty, but it’s a reflection of my feelings on the early primary in general.
I never bought into the pressing need to move it up, given all the other problems we face in Michigan. I don’t like the idea of having to request a ballot for one particular party and having that information be available to the two major political parties—and no one else. I get enough spam, robocalls and the like during campaign season.
I also don’t like the Democratic snub of the state—the only ‘viable’ Democrat the ballot is Hillary Clinton and the democrats aren’t exactly tripping over themselves in their haste to visit Michigan, either.
And what’s the point of voting ‘uncommitted’ as a Democrat, anyway? They still have a chance to pick up a Republican ballot and for against one of the front-runners. That’s who will decide the Republican race in Michigan, anyway—the independents or the crossover voters.
Well, I guess I just answered my question, since I fall in that category: I approach voting as an individual the same way we do here at the paper. I choose who I think would do a better job, rather than follow any particular party.
I guess I’ll see you at the polls, after all.
