One of the most popular war heroes in pop culture history made a triumphant return this week—and, no, I am not talking about Rambo.
Captain America, clad in his (sort of) traditional red, white and blue finery, is once again slinging his shield and tackling terrorists.
But beware, this is not your father’s—or your grandfather’s—comic book hero. Steve Rogers, the man behind the mask for decades, is still dead, buried in a shrine at Arlington National Ceremony. His former sidekick, John ‘Bucky’ Barnes has taken on the role and was introduced in the new uniform this week.
The transformation was something that many comic book fans saw coming. Bucky had long been presumed dead, but was revived as a brainwashed agent for the other side through a long story arc more than a year ago. When Rogers was assassinated at the end of Marvel Comics ‘Civil War’ storyline, his successor was all-but guaranteed at that time.
But knowing—or guessing—the end destination doesn’t mean the journey isn’t worthwhile. Such is the skill of Ed Brubaker, who has more than lived up to the challenge as the head scribe of the long-running series. Again in this issue, his pacing is perfect, his tone excellent, the characterization flawless. When you finally turn the page and see Barnes (you better not call him ‘Bucky’ any more) in full uniform, well the payoff is worth the wait.
The issue is on sale now. Check out “Comic City”: http://www.comiccity.com/ on Ford Road, just west of Lilley in Canton Township.
