The bulk store approach to drug sales

I try not to laugh in court, but sometimes I just can’t help myself.
Take this morning for instance. I was at the 35th District Court in Plymouth—awaiting the start of a preliminary exam—and a man was called up to answer to a new round of drug charges. He was already on probabtion for previous offenses.
“Wait a minute,” Judge Ron Lowe said, and referred to the man’s file. “You were caught with two-and-a-quarter ounces of marijuana. That exceeds the limit for ‘personal use’.”
“If you buy it in large quantities you don’t spend as much, your honor,” the man replied.
That could be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in a courtroom. Delivered as it was, the line didn’t evoke much sympathy from Lowe.
“You’re on probation for drug charges, and you were caught with this much marijuana?” He asked. “That’s a problem in and of itself….”
