Tough decision for Northville Schools

The Northville Public School Board will take a look at a tough question when they meet in a study session tonight.
Should they privatize some of their services to save money?
They’re looking at privatizing their transportation and custodial services to keep costs down and put more money into the classrooms. They brought up the concept nearly two years ago, after they felt like they had cut just about everything they could cut from the budget.
The reason it’s taken this long to get to this point is that the district has taken a slow, cautious approach. It is something that members of the employee unions will be concerned about, of course, as well as parents and students, too. There is a lot to factor in beyond just the numbers.
The school board isn’t close to a decision on it, either. They will probably host a few more study sessions and, most likely, a few dedicated forums on the topic. And, of course, they’re always open for public comment at board meetings, which take place on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
For those that want to get in on the initial discussions, the meeting starts at 7 p.m. tonight. Because they expect a large crowd, the board has moved the meeting to the forum at Hillside Middle School, which is at the corner of Eight Mile Road and Center Street. You know, up on the hill…
