A slow, cautious step

The Northville School Board took a slow, cautious step toward privatizing some services last night.
The board met in a study session to look at the pros and cons of privatizing their custodial, transportation and, ultimately, food services as a way to save funds.
Details about the food service privatization weren’t readily available yet because of stricter requirements set by the state of Michigan. The district only had one response to a Request For Proposals (RFP) from private transportation companies, too.
Privatization of custodial services, however, could save between $400,000 and $1 million, depending on the service and type of contract. The district plans to contact three of the firms that responded to the RFP for further information. The board will meet in another study session—tentatively May 14 at Hillside Middle School. A decision won’t come until the June 10 board meeting, at the earliest.
As many people pointed out last night—and as members of the school board no doubt know—there is more to consider here than mere dollars and cents.
