Yesterday, the Northville Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual State of the Community Luncheon at the Meadowbrook Country Club.
It’s usually a neat little event, with speeches from Mayor Chris Johnson, Township Supervisor Mark Abbo and Schools Superintendent Leonard Rezmierski.
As you might expect, they are all facing the same issues as others across the state. The speeches were a little dry this year, but still, there have been some signs of improvement.
I was impressed to learn (not from the speech, but from a budget story) that the City of Northville has a $2 million budget reserve. That’s certainly nothing to sneeze at in a community with a $6 million annual budget.
I also had no idea that there was once 2,900 acres of institutional land in Northville Township, most of which has since been converted to residential, commercial or park use. Another big slab of that—the Robert Scott Correctional Facility—will soon go away, too.
That and the ongoing idiocy over the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital site—and by idiocy, I mean the danger that four people could essentially transfer the property to Livonia and that Judge Sean Cox won’t let township officials talk about it—are the big impending issues in Northville Township.
And the schools? What can you say about the schools? With nearly $8 million in scholarship money earned last year, Northville students—and the district itself—continue to defy their ever-shrinking budget.
The food wasn’t bad, either.
