Memorial Day reminder

I got an email today from a frustrated Todd Caccamo, Canton Township Trustee.
Caccamo, a marine who served time in Iraq, was disappointed about the lack of attention paid in the community to Memorial Day. Plymouth, Northville, Wayne and Westland—all have dedicated parades that tend to bring out a respectable crowd.
Canton has a ceremony put together by John Spencer, a township employee who is also a veteran. It takes place at 1 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial, which is at the edge of Heritage Park, behind the administration building.
Caccamo can be a bit gung-ho for my tastes sometimes, but he brings up a good point. Maybe people are too busy cooking up ribs or burgers at that time of day, or they hit one of the earlier ceremonies in other communities. It’d be nice to see a good crowd at the Canton event, though. John has virtually put this together on his own and this is an important way to honor those who have made—and continue to make—the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Yet, heading into the weekend, most of the news coverage is centering on how much we’ll have to pay for gas to escape those harsh realities…
