Now it's come to this....

For the latest example of the sad state of affairs here in western Wayne County, I direct you to the Michigan Avenue median here in Wayne.
The city council discussed the issue for about, oh, 15 or 20 minutes Tuesday night because several residents (and probably people passing through, too) have complained about how tall the grass is there.
Michigan Avenue is a state road, maintained through contracts issued to Wayne County.
The conversation revolved around calling so-and-so to call so-and-so and exert some pressure to get better maintenance. Or to let the city take over the job.
Wait a minute. We’re at a place now where we have to exert political pressure to get the grass cut? Now it’s come to this? It’s like we’re in the dark ages…
County officials have basically told the people in Wayne that it’s going to get worse before it gets better. The harsh winter ate up a lot of their annual road maintenance budget, they said, so they will not perform any tree or shrub removal (i.e., dead ash trees); they won’t pick up any litter on state roads; they’ll only replace signs on an emergency basis; and they’ll only perform one street sweep this year.
Wow.
They won’t give up the contract, either, because they get revenue from the state for it.
That puts Wayne officials in a tough spot. I like Councilman Tom Kelly’s suggestion, though, to solve the problem: put Wayne County or the State of Michigan on the weed list!
