Is Mike Bishop getting the message?

That was the underlying question at a ‘Stop the Annexation Rally’ that took place at the Waterford Bend area of Hines Park last night.
Today the legislature, in theory, breaks for the summer. There is an Aug. 5 vote on the issue of whether to annex the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital property to Livonia; there is a court of appeals hearing scheduled sometime in the meantime and there is legislation pending that could make it all moot.
So there was a bit of fatalistic realism under the pavilion last night. There was talk of a last minute email and phone campaign that was tapered with the somewhat gloomy sentiment that legislators didn’t want to hear from people that didn’t reside in their district.
So I guess the better question is not, is Mike Bishop getting the message, but does he WANT to get the message? I’ve tried to get him on the record about that, but didn’t get any further than his press secretary. Someone from his office called earlier this week to ask if we’d run an op-ed from the senator about the subject and I said ‘Sure.’ He sent a follow up email yesterday about it, saying the senator was still reviewing it (I guess Bishop’s holding that up, too). I’ll post it as soon as I practically can.
In answer to the question though, of whether he wants to get the message, my guess is ‘no.’ This has somehow been turned into a political issue and a dispute between Northville Township and a developer, a specific thing made into a nuisance by some vocal residents.
That is truly sad because this is about more than that.
