A note on endorsements

Within a few hours, the first of our candidate endorsements will hit the opinion section on our web site. They are in thepublished version of the paper, which is already on the streets.
This week we’re tackling a couple of the higher-profile elections in western Wayne County, the reace for the 12th District on the county commission and the judge post in the 35th District.
Invariably, there will be someone who will take the John Stewart response to the editorial—that’s where you get offended that your name isn’t selected and you then go on to call me a joke and a loser and all that fun stuff. And if you feel the need, go ahead; I’m not bothered by such things.
We don’t look at these as a personal thing. We try to weigh candidates on both a professional and personal level to see who we think would do a better job in the role. We don’t lean toward any particular political party and give incumbents and non-incumbents the same consideration.
We don’t merely endorse who we think will win, either, but who we think should win. If there’s a problem with the political system today—and there are many—it’s that the concept of government by the people for the people has given way to government by the people who can outspend everyone else. The people who should win the job often don’t have a chance to win the job.
With that said, happy campaigning everyone.
