A shot across the bow

It’s pretty clear what races the Republicans and Democrats are targeting this year.
They’re the ones where each party thinks they have a chance of keeping a seat they stole away from the competition or taking back what is ‘rightfully’ theirs.
Those are the ones that’ll get nasty.
Around here, it’s going to be the race for the 20th District in the House of Representatives. Marc Corriveau, a Democrat, won the seat two years ago in the heavily-Republican district, which includes all of Plymouth and Northville, part of Canton Township and the City of Wayne.
He’s running against Jerry Vorva, a former state representative and city commissioner, in what the Michigan Republican Party calls a ‘major re-election battle.’
The GOP took a swipe at him in a release today asking if he’s worth $13,000 a day. The release points out that he and his House colleagues have only worked a day in the last two months and been paid $13,000 for it. It came on the wake of a scheduled work day—Wednesday—that apparently didn’t happen.
This may be the wrong tactic to take against Corriveau, who has attended more meetings outside of Lansing—in his district—than anyone I’ve ever seen in office. I’ve seen him at Northville Township meetings, Plymouth meetings, Wayne meetings, Northville School Board meetings—even at 20/20 meetings here in Wayne. He’s gone there not just for the touchy-feely stuff, but after he’s made unpopular decisions to explain why he made them, and update people on what’s going on.
And he was far more effective than any Republican during the whole annexation battle that recently embroiled Northville Township.
The answer to the question, of course, is that he’s not worth $13,000 a day. Nobody is, in my opinion. But one thing you can’t attack this guy on is his work ethic.
