There’s an unusual item on the Wayne City Council meeting agenda tonight.
It’s item 4c—you’ll have to take my word for it, since the agenda has still not been posted on the city web site. It falls under the title: Approve the First Reading of a proposed amendment to Ordinance 860: Special Events.
That in itself is not unusual. Cities update their ordinances all the time. What’s unusual is that this amendment (806.05) has a specific target: The Michigan Avenue Cruise. For those that remember, Don Nicholson came up with the idea and spent almost an entire year planning it out, getting approvals from cities from Dearborn down to Wayne, in hopes of bringing a new event into town and more revenue for its businesses. Sure, he was trying to make a few bucks off of it, too.
The weather didn’t help much, but I still remember walking around in the afternoon listening to everyone talk about how nice it was to see people walking around town. It was by far the busiest I’d seen the sidewalks in the downtown area—and that includes the annual Sidewalk Sales.
The amendments spell out different types of permits vendors and businesses will need to take part in the event next year and stipulate that “applicants will be responsible for all costs incurred by the city in insuring the health, safety and welfare of the community, including but not limited to city personnel assigned to the Michigan Avenue Cruise, notification of property owners and city equipment usage during the Michigan Avenue Cruise.”
It says the applicant needs to pay up front, too.
Isn’t that government for you? You try to put on something that highlights the community, gets people excited and gives them something to do and the government starts putting up roadblocks.
Okay, that isn’t the way ALL government works.
