Trustees, hopefuls stick with issues at forum

There was a good turnout for the township trustee candidate forum last night in Northville Township.
It looks like township voters will have their work cut out for them in deciding between incumbents Marjorie Banner, Marv Gans and Chris Roosen, along with challengers Mindy Hermann and Carol Poenisch. There are four seats open; Incumbent Brad Werner lost in the primary.
Everyone in the room knew that the subject of the Northville Psychiatric Hospital would come up, and it did. When asked what they would have done differently, everyone had a nice answer, but the incumbents didn’t have the one I was looking for: Nothing.
This whole issue didn’t turn out the way anybody wanted it to. That much is clear. Nobody is overly happy with the consent agreement between the developer and the township, either. But throughout the whole issue, township trustees tried to get the developer to adhere to the standards of the community. They sought help from everywhere they could—their neighbors, the legislature, the courts—to no avail. I think they did everything they could.
Trying to second guess it now just seems to be pandering for the votes of residents unhappy with the outcome.
