David Fichter works on a portrait of town historian Mildred Hanchett, a prominent part of the Wayne History Mural, while he and Joshua Winer were in town last month. The mural, now complete, will be formally dedicated tonight.
At 6 p.m. tonight at the side of the State Wayne Theater, Wayne representatives will dedicate the City of Wayne History Mural.
For those who haven’t seen this project, it is more than worth checking out. It shows, in bright colors and creative imagery, the story of the city from its humble beginnings to proud industrial present.
I think it’s important to note—since this probably won’t come up tonight—that this project probably would not have happened if it weren’t for City Manager John Zech.
The idea came from the Wayne 20/20 Committee and it was funded through the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), but the Wayne City Council initially balked at the expense. Zech realized the importance of the project and, during a city council goal setting session, urged the council to approve the project.
“Will it solve all of our problems?” He said at the time (and I’m paraphrasing a bit, since it was a few years ago. “No. But I think it’s one of the pieces we need to solve the puzzle.”
The project hasn’t brought in more business yet, but I think it’s given the city a leg up. It shows that there’s something going on.
