So long, Mr. President

Like many Americans, I tuned in to hear President George W. Bush’s farewell address.
Okay, let’s be honest. Like many Americans, I didn’t exactly seek it out. I happened to have the television on when I was sweeping up the floor and once I saw him take the podium I couldn’t look away. I like to think of myself as a student of the written and spoken word, so I’ve always had a sort of train wreck type of fascination with the Commander in Chief. I always cringe when I listen, but I’m compelled to gawk like a rubbernecker sriving by an accident on the highway.
I won’t be sorry to see change at the top. I was never a fan of the guy and I never voted for him. But listening to him last night, I was reminded of the many challenges that came up during his terms in office. He probably served during the most challenging time in our nation’s history—or at least in our recent history.
Next week, Barack Obama will officially take on the mantle and, as our cartoon showed this week, he’s got quite a task ahead of him. I wish him luck.
In the meantime, I sure will miss David Letterman’s ‘great moments in presidential speeches.’
