The Late Bill Shuffle

Well, it looks like I picked the wrong month to skip my water bill.
I had previously blogged about the ‘late bill shuffle,’ a dance I think more and more of us are learning in this difficult economic time—it’s where you pick which bill to pay late in any given month in order to not get too far behind in one area.
Because my water bill now has charges that date back to 2008, I received a friendly reminder (at least the font on the letter looked friendly) from the City of Wayne that the charge could be put on my 2009 tax bill. If that happens, it gives the city the right to shut off water service and request I pay the late balance, plus a two-cycle security deposit to turn the water back on.
“Don’t feel too bad,” I was told when I paid the bill this morning, “More than 1,500 of those notices went out.”
Yep, there are tough times all around. I realize I’m fortunate to still have a job—even though I’m doing more work for less money than before. I’m thinking what I bet many others are: it’s too bad I don’t have a government job….
