Going 'greener' this spring

Canton Township may join the growing number of communities going ‘green’ this year.
The Board of Trustees will hear a presentation tonight about a single stream recycling program for the township. I’ll be interested to see if this plan includes a rewards program like the soon-to-be-implemented one in the City of Westland.
These kinds of programs are important as we all try to be more environmentally conscious and—as much as I hate to say it—municipalities will have to be on the front line of the issue. The sad fact is that there are too many of us unwilling to make a spare trip to another site to dump material that could be recycled.
When he talked about the program in Westland, Mayor Bill Wild said he hoped to get the other communities involved in the Western Wayne County Central Sanitation Authority (WWCSA) involved in it. It’s a laudable goal and I hope he’s successful at it, but so far Westland officials have shown a better ability to provide more innovative programs for residents.
