Cut to the bone

The Wayne City Council continued their budget deliberations Friday night and the discussion was tamer than I expected.
The tone was set for a contentious meeting with a flyer I found stuffed into my door last week; the anonymous piece of literature claimed to point out the facts of the Wayne City Services cuts. That flyer pointed out the amount that would be cut from the Department of Public Works budget; that department will see 21 full-time equivalents cut down to 10 and a number of them reduced to part-time hours.
It also pointed out that the DPW and General Employees were the only groups being cut even thought they offered wage concessions in the past. That’s not exactly true; every department is being cut. The police and fire are losing man-hours, too and the proposed budget shows no full-time parks and recreation director and virtually a one-man planning department.
But the people who spoke on Friday did a good job. They didn’t point fingers, they presented their points. They were all good ones, too, but $4.2 million is a big hole to fill.
The council has a week or so to try to get their heads around this situation prior to the next budget study session, which takes place at 7 p.m. on May 26.
