Good luck, Chuck

I greeted with mixed feeling the news that Chuck Pickering dropped out of the race for Westland City Council.
On one hand, it’s sad to see an experienced politician decide to move on—particularly given the difficult economy we’re facing and the difficult budgetary decisions ahead.
On the other hand, it opens the door for another newcomer and it’s good to have new voices and perspectives on the council. With is departure, there will only be one incumbent running for re-election, meaning there will be three new faces on the Westland council—and nine people vying for the spot. That should make for an interesting election season.
I’ve thought a bit about term limits at the local level. I don’t think they’ve been beneficial in Lansing but I think the ultimate goal of such limits—to get more people involved in the political process—might be better realized at the city council or city commission level (like it has been in Plymouth).
I think that should be looked into in the City of Wayne, where it’s difficult to get anyone interested in a run for office unless there’s a vacancy up there.
