A perfect chance to show leadership

It’s difficult to know what to expect tonight in Van Buren Township, where former director of public safety Gerald Champagne will appeal his termination in front of the full board of trustees.
The hearing, which was posted as a special meeting, starts at 7 p.m. in township hall.
There have been reports of a divided board of trustees and low morale in township hall for weeks, now. The board may well be divided on the fate of Champagne, who had served as public safety director for nearly five years before he was terminated last month by Supervisor Paul White.
Certainly the audience will be.
This will be a chance for White to show some leadership. He has taken criticism of his handling of the situation. Some of it has come from me, and he needs to take the first step in restoring order and setting the tone.
If he doesn’t, this may well just be the start of problems for the township.
