Northville tops Saline
Speed and chemistry were the keys for the Northville Lady Mustang basketball team heading into the season opener on Tuesday.
The combination proved lethal as the Lady ‘Stangs swatted the Saline Hornets, 52-33 in Saline.
Northville raced to a 19-5 lead after one quarter of play and boosted its advantage to 27-11 at the half. After the break the Lady ‘Stangs got going again and led the third quarter, 14-10, extending their lead further, 41-21. Saline outscored Northville’s bench, 12-11, in the fourth but it was too little too late.
“I thought we executed our press and defense pretty well,” said Northville Coach Pete Wright. “We were able to get some easy scores by running the floor and on some turnovers with our pressure. Sarah Stern had a great game leading our team and getting everyone involved.
Krysta Cicala did a nice job coming off the bench and contributing.”
Stern, a junior point guard, led the team in scoring with 13 points, including 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. She also had five assists and five steals. Cicala, also a junior, added 10 to Northville’s total, led the team with six rebounds and blocked one shot. Senior Jessica Boerger contributed with six points, four steals, three assists and one blocked shot.
The rest of the scoring was spread out. Sophomore Chelsea Atzinger scored five while senior Emily Pelts, junior Allison Holmes, junior Brittany Birdsall and senior Kristin Fiscus all scored four points each. Junior Annie Tasse rounded out the scoring with a basket for two.
Holmes also had five rebounds and Birdsall two. Sophomore Kelsey Baskins recorded one rebound.
Northville hosts South Lyon at 7 p.m. today and Novi at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
