Inkster’s Michael Bailey (17) pursues Ecorse’s quarterback Anthony Jones (5) in the Vikings’ 41-8 victory at home on Saturday. The Inkster Vikings seemed stalled for most of the first quarter but when they got going they were unstoppable.
Inkster routed Ecorse, 41-8, at home on Saturday afternoon.
As much as Inkster Coach Greg Carter would like to think that the hefty win would redeem their one-point loss to Ypsilanti last week, it didn’t.
“This doesn’t make up for last week,” he said. “I think last week will stick with us for a while. We had an opportunity to win a game and we didn’t get it done.”
It took the Vikes 11 minutes and nine seconds to completely shake off the previous week’s loss. Senior running back Tim Hogue put Inkster on the board with a 2-yard push into the end zone. J.J. Snelling added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Vikings took advantage of a short field on their next possession, their first of the second frame. Hogue shook off tacklers for a 12-yard scoring run. The kick-after was wide right, but Inkster took a 13-0 lead.
Then Michael Bailey recovered an Ecorse fumble on the Raiders’ 32. Anre` Goree made quick work of the turnover and scrambled 18 yards for a score with 6:03 left in the half. The kick was good for a 20-0 advantage. Then, after Ecorse failed to convert on a 4-and-1 play, Inkster took over on the Raiders’ 29. Three plays later Aaron Shavers connected with Snelling for a 10-yard score, making it a 27-0 game.
Joseph Age picked up another Ecorse fumble and returned it for a score with 8:05 left in the third. Phillip Moore finished off Inkster’s scoring when he picked up another Ecorse loose ball and returned it for a touchdown with 6:47 left in the third, making it a 41-0 game.
Ecorse’s only points came off of a touchdown with 3:05 left in the fourth. Anthony Jones ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 41-8.
“We didn’t try to prove any points, we just wanted to play hard,” Carter said. “Obviously there are some things we have to do right. We have to tackle a little better on defense. But the season is young and hopefully we’ll get better as we go.
“The offensive line is doing a pretty good job and that was a question mark coming in to the season. I think they’ve really developed.
“We at least hustled and didn’t get caught up in the score like we did last week,” he added. “It’s a learning process and we have to develop a killer instinct and try to finish off games. Hopefully we’ll do that before the season ends.
“We’re coming but we have a long way to go.”
Inkster heads to Dearborn Heights Annapolis for 4 p.m. kick off on Friday.
