Carlson shuts down Romulus
After starting off the season with two promising shutout victories, the Romulus Eagles were blanked, 35-0, by host Gibraltar Carlson on Friday night.
Carlson’s Mike Finley set the tone right away when he returned the opening kick off 88 yards for a score. Carlson then added to the lead when Quarterback Eric Calvird hit Willie Mullens with a 45-yard strike with about 8:25 left in the first.
Calvrid boosted Carlson’s lead to 21-0 when he scored from a yard out on a keeper to end the half.
Finley added a 30-yard run in the second and Mullens scored on a 15-yard run in the third, capping off the scoring, 35-0.
Defense was obviously the key. Carlson limited Romulus running phenom Mario Crawford to just 40 yards, according to Romulus Coach Matt Ladach. Crawford thrashed Redford Thurston for almost 300 yards the prior week.
“Carlson is a well-schooled team,” Ladach said. “They have some very good players and, on top of that, they execute very well.”
“This was a very frustrating loss for our team,” he added. “Hopefully we have all learned from our mistakes, and hopefully we will get them corrected before Friday’s game against Crestwood.”
Ondre Mathews was 3-for-7 for 59 yards and Steve Hawes completed two passes for 47 yards for Romulus. Leroy Talley tallied up 57 yards receiving on one catch. Andre Smith had two catches for 25 yards.
Cedric Smith led Romulus’ defense with nine tackles. Shane Wells had eight.
Romulus maintains a wining 2-1 record and will host Dearborn Heights Crestwood at 7 p.m. on Friday.
“We want to get back to basics, “Ladach said. “We have to do what we do best and that’s to play disciplined football.
“The kids weren’t happy,” he added.
“That’s good to see. They didn’t just shrug their shoulders and forgot about it. I know they do not like losing.”
