Lady Tigers overcome John Glenn
It was her team’s third game in four days but senior Taylor Manley wasn’t going to let her Belleville Lady Tigers lose.
With that in mind Manley scored 27 points to help Belleville overcome host John Glenn, 53-41, on Friday.
“Taylor went into action and took things into her own hands,” said Belleville Coach Kevin Edwards. “I think she saw how the first quarter went and saw how the team was playing and decided to do something about it. The rest of team reacted to her and worked to put things away.”
Manley scored 13 of her 27 in the second quarter.
Belleville was down 12-9 after one period of play but the Lady Tigers rallied behind Manley and outscored Glenn, 22-11, in the second.
Belleville held off Glenn in the second half, outscoring the Lady Rockets 11-9 in each of the final quarters.
“Taylor Manley is a really good player,” said Glenn Coach Mike Schuette. “We couldn’t contain her. (Belleville) put a lot of pressure on us the whole game. The one thing I did like was how our girls handled the pressure.”
Sophomore Brittany Holbrook led the Lady Rockets with 10 points. Brandi Jones and Brittany Brown each added nine.
Danica Holmes added 10 for Belleville.
Both teams were coming off of a wins earlier in the week.
Belleville took part in the Allen Park Invite where they played River Rouge and Allen Park.
The Lady Tigers blasted River Rouge 74-18 last Tuesday.
Holmes led with 17 points. Kendall Acho added 15 while Manley and Miriah Gordon each knocked down 14. Courtney Holland secured 13 rebounds in the contest.
On Thursday Belleville put host Allen Park away, 51-31.
Manley led the pack with 18. Holmes scored 13 and Acho 12. Holland was a force on the boards again with 14 rebounds.
Manley, with scoring 32 points against Salem, is averaging almost 23 points a game.
“This team is more focused than teams in previous years,” Edwards said. “These girls really want be the best they can be.”
Glenn trounced Farmington 54-24 last Tuesday.
Jones scored 19 to lead the Lady Rockets.
Glenn and Belleville could meet again in the district tournament at the end of the season.
Schuette feels he has different team than a year ago.
“This team is vastly improved from last year,” he said. “Most of the girls that are starting had significant playing time last year; that’s encouraging. I think we’ll get better as the season goes on.”
