Northville hoopsters topple South Lyon

The Northville Lady Mustangs overcame both foes on the hardwood last week to remain undefeated, 3-0.

They first moved past visitors Ann Arbor Pioneer, 53-34, last Tuesday.

Starting point guard Sarah Stern had an outstanding all-around game. She led the team in scoring with 15 points. She also spread the ball around, earning eight assists. The junior speedster used her quickness to nab four steals in the outing, too.

“Sarah is extremely unselfish and gets everyone involved,” said Northville Coach Pete Wright. “She is able to break defenses down and create easy opportunities for all of her teammates.”

After an even first quarter, 10-10, Stern and company limited Pioneer to seven points while racking up 12 to give them a 22-17 half-time lead. In the second half, the Lady ‘Stangs held the Pioneers to single digits in the final two quarters. Northville’s offense did the rest of the work, outscoring Ann Arbor, 31- 17.

The rest of the scoring for Northville was balanced. Emily Pelts had seven while Annie Tesse, Jessica Boerger and Krysta Cicala each had six. Allison Holmes added five and Brittany Birdsall and Kelsey Baskins each had two.

Balanced scoring is what carried Northville past South Lyon on Thursday at home.

Nobody on the team hit double figures in the 34-22 win.

Chelsea Atzinger led the team with eight points and six steals.

Tasse and Stern contributed with six apiece while Pelts and Boerger each added four. Holmes, Baskins—who came in for foul-troubled Stern—and Kristin Fiscus all had two each.

“We have had very balanced scoring so far this year,” Wright said.

Northville raced to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and racked up 14 points in the second for a 22-13 half-time advantage.

The Lions outscored Northville 8-6 in the final eight minutes but, with Northville holding South Lyon to one point in the third, it was too little too late for South Lyon.

The players are also being unselfish. Against the Lions, the team accumulated 11 assists by seven different players and 19 from six players against Ann Arbor.

Northville’s’ team chemistry was put to the test on Tuesday when they hosted Novi. The results were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Mustangs head to Churchill at 7 p.m. tonight.
