Vikes lose, 62-33

The Inkster Lady Vikings lost to Detroit Pershing by almost 30 points on Saturday and Inkster Coach Peggy Carr isn’t happy.

Inkster’s usually explosive offense sputtered in the 62-33 loss.
“I think the girls stuck to the game plan for about a quarter,” Carr said. “They folded. They didn’t have any heart and everyone had an excuse. I told them we needed to start penetrating and box out and they didn’t do either.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” she added. “We have a long way to go. What are they going to do…fold every time?”
There was only a four-point difference at the end of the first eight minutes. Pershing led 14-10 but things fell apart quickly from there.

The Lady Doughboys racked up 22 points against Inkster’s lackadaisical defense in the second while the offense only knocked down nine points. Things turned worse after the break. The Lady Vikings only scored four while Pershing added 12 to their lead. Inkster finally hit double digits again in the fourth with 10, but Detroit added another 14.

Pershing had three players in double figures.

“I was embarrassed,” Carr said. “I thought we could beat them. I wouldn’t be so upset if I knew they tried; if they left their hearts out on the court but they didn’t. You can’t teach them that. You can’t teach them to have heart.”

Senior Lonnie Terrell led Inkster with 19 points. Senior Brittany Scales added eight for the Lady Vikes.

Inkster put together a better game to defeat rival Robichaud, 48-28, last Tuesday.

Inkster took a 27-18 half-time lead, outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 8-3, in the third and, 13-6, in the final two shifts.

Scales led the Vikes with 11 and Pack added 10 and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.

“I thought we played okay,” Carr said. “I think just about everybody that played, scored. We didn’t have Lonnie so I was a little concerned how the rest of the team would play without her. But they played together.”

Inkster starts league play at home against Lincoln Park at 7 p.m. on Thursday and things don’t get any easier when they head to Belleville next Thursday and host Romulus the following Tuesday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

“The next couple of weeks are important to us,” Carr said. “We’ll see how the girls react.”
