Lady ‘Stangs shut down Franklin, Wayne

Northville went on to beat Franklin, 48-36, at home on Thursday.The Northville Lady Mustangs started division play off on the right foot last week. They beat both of their opponents to up their overall record to 7-2 and are 2-0 in the Western division.
Junior point guard Sarah Stern led the way for the Lady ‘Stangs when Northville moved past Franklin, 48-36, at home on Thursday.
She scored 17 points in the outing. She also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Chelsea Atzinger followed with 13 points and also grabbed six rebounds and had four assists. Senior Jessica Boerger scored nine with six rebounds. Junior Annie Tesse led the team in assists with five.
It was nip and tuck through the opening quarter but Northville edged out Franklin, 12-11. In the second, Northville’s defense stepped it up a notch, holding the Lady Patriots to eight points while the offense burned Franklin for 17 points and a 10-point lead at the half.
Franklin offensive struggles continued after the break. Northville only allowed them four points in the third and scored 12 for a hefty 41-23 advantage after 24 minutes.
Northville managed to outscore Northville’s’ bench 13-7 in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough.
The Lady ‘Stangs held the struggling Zebras to single digits in three of the four quarters for a 53-30 victory at home last Tuesday.
Northville outscored Wayne 37-17 in the first half, with 24 of those points in the first. Strong defense limited Wayne to three points in the third and Northville nearly took a 30-point lead with 12 points in the frame. Wayne outscored Northville 10-3 in the final quarter.
Atzinger led with 12 points and four steals. Boerger scored eight.
Barbee scored 14 for Wayne.
“It was nice to start off division play with two wins,” said Northville Coach Pete Wright. “We played very well in the Franklin game. Hopefully that will continue this week as we have two tough games with Plymouth and Walled Lake Western.
“The team has been progressing each week,” he added. “I think we are getting more comfortable offensively and starting to make some shots. Defensively we have done a good job containing the opponents’ best players the last few games. We will need to continue to make some perimeter shots and play great defense to compete for the division title.”
Northville is at Walled Lake Western at 7 p.m. today and host Canton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
