Belleville Lady Tigers win 11th straight game
The Belleville Lady Tigers continue to impress as they oppress opponents on the hardwood.
Led by the dynamic guard duo of Danica Holmes and Taylor Manley, Belleville has won 11 straight for an 11-1 overall record and remains undefeated, 5-0, in the Mega Red.
To get there the Lady Tigers snuck out a 38-31 victory against host Wyandotte on Thursday. Belleville had to rely on defense to get the job done, though.
“We couldn’t get anything to fall,” said Belleville Coach Kevin Edwards. “The shots weren’t going but the girls kept playing tough defense. It was a team effort; someone was always there to make plays.”
Defense has been a staple of the team. Belleville has given up less than 40 points per game before the Romulus game last Tuesday, according to Edwards. The offense has gotten the job done as well, averaging more than 60 before facing Wyandotte.
Belleville took a 17-10 half-time lead. Then the Lady Tigers outscored Wyandotte, 14-11, in the third and added another seven in the fourth for the win.
Manley led with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Wyandotte. Courtney Holland nabbed 11 rebounds in the win and is averaging double figures off of the boards this year.
Edwards relied again on a combination of stout defense and a hefty dose of offense to defeat the Romulus Lady Eagles, 70-47, at home last Tuesday.
Three Tigers ended up in double figures: Manley led all scorers with 33 points; Holmes added 15 and junior Kendall Acho, 12. Holland snagged 15 boards.
Belleville raced ahead 23-9 in the first quarter and outscored Romulus 15-10 in the second.
“We actually started out kind of slow,” Edwards said. “Then we picked it up on defense and got a lead and maintained it.”
The Lady Tigers score 16 in each of the final two quarters. Romulus picked things up in the second half, scoring 12 and 16 respectively.
Alyssa Long led Romulus with 18 points.
Romulus fell to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Red when they lost at home to Southgate, 55-49, on Thursday.
Erika Wasson led the team with 25 points.
Belleville starts the second round of league play when they host Southgate at 7 p.m. today. The Lady Tigers will have a rematch with the Lady Vikings in Inkster at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Romulus hosts Ypsilanti at 7 p.m. today and Wyandotte at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
