Canton Chiefs go undefeated

Canton ran their way to a perfect season with a 42-13 victory against cross-campus rival Salem on Friday. Photo by Ken GarnerThe Canton Chief football team achieved a perfect 9-0 season last week when they defeated cross-campus rival Salem, 42-13, on Friday.
Salem struggled all year under first-year coach Parker Salowich. They went 0-9.
Canton got it done with their ground game on Friday, earning 342 yards and six touchdowns. The Chiefs started the night off with 21 first-quarter points.
Senior halfback Nick Moores scored the first touchdowns on runs of 11 and 20 yards. He also punched in a two-point conversion after the second score to make it a 14-0 game. Senior running back Antwaun Hawkins scored the third of the frame on a two-yard plunge into the end zone.
Senior fullback Devin Murphy and Moores scored in the second quarter on runs of 10 and 15 yards respectively. Canton took a 35-0 lead in to the locker room at the half.
Salem scored the lone touchdown of the third quarter when sophomore running back Anthony Mullins broke loose for a 27-yard run to pay dirt. Senior Josh Cudney’s extra point was good to make it a 35-7 game.
Canton added one more when junior Jordan Raiford scored on a 21-yard run in the fourth.
Salem’s Mullins broke loose 48 seconds later for a 65-yard jaunt to the end zone to finish the scoring.
Mullins led all rushers with 108 yards on 15 attempts. Moores led Canton with 95 yards.
The Chiefs will face Livonia Stevenson (6-3) in a pre-district contest scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday at Canton. The winner will face either Monroe (6-3) or South Lyon (8-1) next week for the Division 1, Region 2, District 2 championship.
