Rocks undefeated in Lakes

The Salem Lady Rocks are playing some of their best basketball of the season right now and it’s just in time for the Western Lakes Championship Tournament that started this week.

Salem finished regular season play an undefeated 10-0 in the Lakes division. Cross-campus rival Canton wrapped up the Western side of the league without a loss, too, at 10-0. The two rival teams could play each other in the tournament finale to see which will wear the conference crown home.

“We feel good right now,” said Salem Coach Fred Thomann. “We set a goal to win the division and we did. We earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament and have home-court advantage.”

Salem beat both Livonia Churchill and John Glenn for the perfect division score.

A good mix of offense and defense took care of John Glenn, 60-26, last Tuesday. Senior Teresa Coppiellie led Salem with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Salem amassed 27 points in the first half while keeping the Lady Rockets in single digits in the fist two quarters—nine and five respectively. Then the Rocks knocked down another 33 in the second half. Glenn scored 11 in the third but couldn’t get past the defense in the finale, only scoring one point.

Taylor Langham scored 13 and Lauren Kurtz.

Salem Also knocked off Churchill in a low-scoring affair, 35-21.

Langham led the Lady Rocks with 14 points.

The Offense sputtered in the first half only recording 15 points in 16 minutes of play. Churchill had seven. Thomann made some adjustments at the intermission and Salem outscored the Chargers 20-14 the rest of the way.

“It was just one of those games that you have to dig out,” he said. “Churchill held the ball and played a delay game so there wasn’t much scoring. The kids handled it well and played well off the boards.”

Kurtz crashed the boards for 12 rebounds and Chelsea Davis grabbed 11.

More Scores:

Plymouth defeated host Wayne, 61-34, on Tuesday. Kelsi Robinson scored 17 and Shaakira Haywood had 16 and 10 rebounds for Plymouth.

Plymouth lost to Franklin, 37-26, on Thursday. Haywood scored 11 in the contest for the Wildcats.
