Romulus Eagles continue to struggle, lose 2 of last 3 games

Romulus’ struggles on the hardwood continued on Monday when the Lady Eagles fell to Monroe, 78-49.

The Lady Trojans “boxed out”—a technique used by players to gain positioning between another player and the basket—to perfection in the contest to get rebounds and a plethora of second chances to hold Romulus at bay.

The method earned Monroe 27 points in the first quarter and limited Romulus to eight points.

“We actually started off the quarter good,” said Romulus Coach Candice Finley. “Then, I guess, we must have thought they weren’t going to rebound. They had so many second chances. I’ve never seen a team ‘box out’ the way they do. That’s something we’ve been struggling with all season.”

Monroe led, 44-23, at the half.

There was no stopping the Trojans after the intermission. They added another 18 in the third for a 63-33 advantage. The fourth quarter was a draw—both teams knocked down 16—but the deficit was too much for Romulus to overcome.

It wasn’t all bad for the Lady Eagles.

Erika Wasson continued with her terrific senior campaign and led the team with 18 points. Jasmine Brown added 17.

“We didn’t play a horrible game,” Finley said. “We just didn’t box out. We have to keep getting better at it and start getting ready for district play.”

Wasson scored 20-plus points in the team’s two contests last week.

Last Tuesday, although not the leader, she scored 20 to help carry her team over Wyandotte, 54-48, in overtime.

Jasmine Brown led the efforts that time with 23. Alyssa Long grabbed 20 rebounds.

Wasson also scored 22 in the 78-58 loss to host Inkster on Thursday.

Cristina Barnett and Brown each had 14.

However, it wasn’t enough. Inkster’s Lonnie Terrell led all scorers with 37 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Brittany Scales added 20 with 10 rebounds.

“Inkster came out ready,” Finley said. “We beat them by 20 the first time we played so I expected them to want payback. We can’t allow both Lonnie and Brittany to have a good shooting night and they did.”

Romulus kept it close in the first, trailing only by four, 19-15, but it was Inkster’s 24-point second quarter that put the game out of reach for the Lady Eagles. Terrell scored 12 in the frame. Inkster outscored Romulus, 36-29, in the second half for the win.

Romulus hosts Mega Red leader Belleville a 7 p.m. today and head to Southgate at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
