Rockets 8-0 in Lakes
The John Glenn Rockets continue to impress and dominate in their quest for a Western Lakes Conference championship.
With only two games remaining before the conference playoff tournament next week, the Rockets essentially wrapped up the Lakes side of the conference with two wins last week.
Glenn is the only undefeated team, 8-0, on the Lakes side. Their closest competitor is a 5-3 Salem team.
Defense proved to be key in both wins last week. The Rockets held their competitors to just 42 points in each game.
On Friday, Glenn beat struggling host Walled Lake Northern (1-7 Lakes), 54-42.
The Knights came out charging. They took a 10-2 lead early in the opening quarter. The Rockets got things going late and narrowed the gap 11-8.
Glenn outscored Northern 14-8 in the second and came out firing in the second half, scoring 16 in each of the final two quarters.
Junior Stefan Marken has emerged as a threat for the Rockets. He scored 16 points against the Knights, offered up seven assists on the night and grabbed 10 rebounds. He also scored 15 points against Churchill last Wednesday. Earl Hardison added 12 against Northern.
“He’s been balanced on defense and rebounding for us,” said Glenn Coach Dan Young. “He’s probably our best shooter and is getting more consistent.”
The Rockets had four solid quarters against the visiting Churchill Chargers last Wednesday—a game that was rescheduled due to inclement weather closed schools.
The change didn’t phase the Rockets, who won the game, 66-42.
Glenn carried a 34-13 lead into the locker room at the half and outscored the Chargers, 32-29, the rest of the way.
“We had to establish our defense from the get-go,” Young said. “The kids rotated well and helped each other out. We got a lot of stuff off of our defense in transition.”
Hardison led the team on offense with 16 points. Keshawn Martin added eight points and assisted on nine baskets.
Young said the season, which was a question mark at the beginning, comes down to two things: chemistry and fun.
“We have very good chemistry right now,” he said. “Everyone is doing what we ask them to and working hard. We’re just having fun and that’s a huge part of it. We just want to keep it going.”
Glenn finishes the regular season with a 7 p.m. match up at Livonia Stevenson on Friday.
