Glenn cagers fall to Central

Glenn's Austin Anderson tries to get by Walled Lake Central's towering defenders, senior center Joe Marshall (42) and senior guard Bryan Peterson (20) in Wednesday's 63-52 loss.

A shorthanded John Glenn basketball squad struggled late against Walled Lake Central in the Western Lakes championship cancellation game on Wednesday night at Plymouth High School.

The result: a 63-52 loss and fourth place in the conference tournament.

Although a good team, not too much credit can be given to Central’s Vikings. Glenn, down Earl Hardison (injury) and Cardarryl Jones (sick), only dressed eight players.

However, those eight players battled through the contest and stayed neck-and-neck with Central until about the five-minute mark of the fourth.

The Rockets took a 42-41 lead on a triple by junior Keshawn Martin at 6:12. Then the Vikings went on a nine-point spree.

Dorian Prather ended the run with a three-point play. Central sent the Rockets reeling back again with a 13-4 run that was only interrupted by baskets from sophomore Austin Anderson and Martin. Anderson put a stop to it with a triple to make it 62-52.

Viking Senior Brandon Joseff finished the scoring, splitting a pair from the line.

“Both times we played (Central) it came right down to the wire,” said Glenn Coach Dan Young. “I think they just had a little more on us tonight. They wanted it a little more than we did.

“Our guys battled and I thought that they competed,” he added. “We just came up a little short. I think we ran out of gas a little bit.”

Glenn had an early advantage, taking a 14-13 lead into the second quarter. Senior Rob Jones and Martin each scored six in the first.

In the second, Glenn went up, 19-17, on a triple by junior Stefan Marken, but Central found a groove went on a 12-2 run to make it a 29-21 game. Anderson and Martin each scored a basket to put the first half to rest, 29-25.

It took half of the third frame before either team scored. Anderson hit the first basket to make it a two-point game. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way. Central headed into the final session with a 39-37 advantage.

Marken opened the fourth with a basket to tie but the rest was history.

Martin led the Rockets with 15. Anderson added 13.
