Canton loses opener
Canton lost its first season-opening football game in nearly 10 years on Saturday.
Out-of-town guests Toledo Central Catholic beat the Chiefs, 27-7, at Eastern Michigan University’s Rynearson Stadium as a part of the two-day, seven-game Big Day Prep Showdown III showcase.
Canton went four-and-out on its first possession, putting the ball in hands of the Toledo offense, which had yet to prove itself.
One play later the Fighting Irish demonstrated that they were worthy adversaries. On his first play from scrimmage, quarterback Tyler Kleeberger launched a 55-yard missile to wide out Donte Johnson to give Toledo a 7-0 lead at the 10:43 mark.
That didn’t stall Canton’s running machine offense.
Canton burned up more than six minutes with an 11-play drive that resulted with a 15-yard touchdown run by Jordon Raiford. Jeff Sanctorum evened the score, 7-7, with the point after at 4:27 of the first quarter.
The rest of the game belonged to Toledo’s fullback, Brad Rogers. He rushed for 120 yards on 22 carries with three touchdowns (7, 1, 1) to put the game away.
Raiford finished with 77 yards rushing for Canton. Dalton Walser followed with 76. Dan Wanshon led the defense with nine solo tackles and four assists.
The Chiefs host John Glenn at 4:30 pm today.
