Wayne soccer camp a success

Second through fifth grade soccer players enjoyed themselves at the City of Wayne Recreation soccer camp last week.

There is little argument that the City of Wayne is a football haven.

But is it an international football—a.k.a. soccer—town? It could lead to that with the success of a recent elementary soccer camp last week.

The camp, put on by the City of Wayne Parks and Recreation, brought 46 participants from grades 2-5 to the soccer fields at Attwood Park. That was the second highest turnout for a sports camp behind the 58 that showed for a basketball camp four years ago, according to Parks and Recreation supervisor Steve Winkleman.

Camp Instructor Nick Lloyd of the Wayne Westland Soccer Association taught basic fundamental skills for beginners and intermediate players. Camp fees were $30 for residents and $40 for non-resident and participants walked away with a soccer ball and t-shirt.

“We try to keep our sports camps at a cheap rate so that all can participate and have fun,” Winkleman said. “The camp was a great success. Nick Lloyd did a great job instructing his first camp with us and the kid’s really enjoyed it.”

The camp raised $500 for the Elementary After School Recreation Program.

The next soccer camp will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 14-18 for grades 6-9. Registration is open now at the Wayne Community Center. For more information, call (734) 721-7400.
