Golf outing benefits The Senior Alliance, community

Next week, residents of Wayne County will be able to take a shot to help seniors throughout the community.

The Senior Alliance (TSA) is hosting their annual golf outing fundraiser on July 25 at the Woodlands of Van Buren Golf course.

“It’s actually our largest fundrasier,” said Lori Vail, program manager for TSA. “It’s very important. It helps support quite a few of our programs.”

Costs to get involved vary. Golfers can take part for $150, or a foursome can play for $450. There are also sponsorship opportunities ranging from $300 to $2,500. The event features golf as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner.

“It’s a whole day event,” said Vail. “It’s a lot of fun.”

The Senior Alliance provides several programs for senior citizens throughout Wayne County, including meals on wheels, holiday meals, care management, prescription drug assistance, MMAP (Medicare, Medicaid Assistance Program), chore services and more.

The organization has the second largest senior population in the state of Michigan; 171,813 people over the age of 60 years old that live in southern and western Wayne County, according to Vail. She estimated that number would increase by as much as 30 percent next year.

That, factored into the rising costs of gas and other issues people on fixed incomes face in a tough economy, means the organization has a long list of people who need assistance.

“We’ve seen an increased need in the past several years,” she said.

Of course, another aspect of the economy is that people are less willing—or able—to contribute to the many charitable organizations out there.

“It’s really difficult,” she said. “It’s very hard to do any fund-raising right now, but we’re not the only agency that is having rough times.”

To get involved in the golf outing or to sponsor a portion of it, call Vail at (734) 727-2017 or email her at Lvail@tsalink.org.
