Glenn outlasts Canton
Those who attended the John Glenn-Canton football game in Westland on Friday sure got their money’s worth.
The game came down to a Glenn Coach Tim Hardin decidision to go for it or not to go for it in overtime. He had the choice to kick the extra point to tie or go for the win with a two-point conversion in overtime.
He chose the latter and it paid off with a 36-35 victory.
Fresh off the team’s first victory against Churchill a week earlier, Hardin said that he had a few surprises for Canton. He wasn’t kidding.
Glenn came out firing on Friday against the chiefs and earned a 21-7 half-time lead. Canton came back to knot things up at 21 but the Rockets answered with a 91-yard kickoff return to make it 28-21. Canton tied it again and regulation ended with the two teams tied, 28-28.
Canton scored on its first two plays in overtime and kicked the extra point to go up 35-28. Quarterback Jerome Scales scored two plays later on a five-yard run for Glenn to make it 35-34. Then it was decision time: go for one or two.
“It had crossed my mind that Canton only has one player that goes two ways,” Hardin explained. “We have many that play offense and defense. I felt that we would be at a disadvantage the longer the game went on.”
His team was already lined up for the extra point before he called the time out to consider the two-point option.
“I looked at our offensive coordinator, Steve Waller, and he told me what play he wanted to run and said, ‘trust me, it will work,’” Harden added. “It worked just like we thought it would and we came out with the victory. It was pretty exciting at the end. Our players played hard the whole game and never gave up, my hat is off to them.”
The Rockets will have their work cut out for them when Franklin visits for Glenn’s homecoming bout at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Canton hosts Wayne at 7 p.m. on Friday.
