The Canton Chiefs topped one of their campus rivals--the Plymouth Wildcats--1-0 last week. The Canton Chiefs beat the Plymouth Wildcats, 1-0, in an otherwise lackluster cross-campus rivalry bout last Thursday.
Usually the emotions run high at the Plymouth-Canton Education Park sports fields when two of the campus’s three teams pair off in a rival match up. Not this time. The Chiefs and Cats cautiously battled through an emotionless game, said Plymouth Coach Jeff Neschich.
“It just wasn’t the usual emotional cross-campus match up that you would expect,” said he. “Nobody played a good game and nobody played to win. The game lacked emotion—not what it should be.”
The trams battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first half. About 3:00 into the second half Canton streaked up the center and scored the winner, according to Neschich.
“We really weren’t playing our best game,” he added. “We were playing pretty soft. We kind of expected Canton to score—they were putting a lot of pressure on us in the first half.”
Plymouth had much better finish in last Tuesday’s game against Franklin and pulled out a 3-1 victory.
Brad Finnegan put things in motion first for the ‘Cats, scoring the first goal in the first half. Vinh Nguyen added a goal another for Plymouth to take a 2-0 lead. The Patriots cut the lead in half with a goal to end the first 40 minutes of play.
Plymouth’s Daniel Jasewicz finished the scoring in the first minute of the second half, according to Neschich.
The loss to Canton knocked Plymouth out of contention for division and conference honors, now the ‘Cats are focused entirely on district play that started on Monday, Oct. 13. Neschich is still waiting for his young team to win that one big game that will help them get over the hump.
“We’ve played great against good teams and played poor against bad teams,” Neschich said. “If we can put everything together we can play anybody, but can we beat them? Our focus right now is on playoffs because that’s where it really counts.”
