Rockets pull out nail biter against 'Cats
The Rockets pulled off one of its best victories of the young season last Tuesday, when they beat the visiting Plymouth Wildcats in five games.
The Rockets struggled early in the evening, plagued with over passes to their opponents and inconsistent serving. They lost the first game, 25-20, and the third game, 25-22. Junior Katie Down came off of the bench to tighten up John Glenn’s defense in the second game, and the Rockets seem to settle down, and won, 25-20, according to third year GLenn Coach Julian Wargo.
“I think that we played very tight at times,” Wargo said. “Playing in front of a big crowd isn’t easy. We tended to compound our mistakes and take ourselves out of the game.”
Glenn knotted the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth game.
Big plays by seniors Brittany Holbrook and Stacey Truskowski got the Rockets on track. Holbrook led the offense with 21 kills and 3 blocks, while Truskowski had 14 kills, many at critical times.
“Stacey was able to get a big kill when we needed it”, said Wargo.
John Glenn’s defense also picked things up, especially when their backs were against the wall in Game 4. Sophomore Brooke Zywick turned in 23 digs, while sophomore Halie Baker and Truskowski each contributed 22 digs on the night against a hard-hitting Plymouth team.
Truskowski also turned around her earlier serving woes, serving for eight straight points to lead off Game 5. Plymouth didn’t give in and made a run at the victory but the Rockets held them off, 12-12.
“You have to give (Plymouth) credit,” Wargo said. “They scratched and crawled their way back in Game 5. Fortunately, our defense was able to hang on to Stacey’s lead. The win was huge. It meant a lot to our fans, it meant a lot to our school and community to realize that the girls worked so hard in the off season and to see it pay off for us.”
